Accommodation styles in Australia
Five Star Luxury
Australia has a great selection of international hotel groups and Five Star Hotels that provide the ultimate in luxury and comfort. They include; Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Intercontinental, Radisson, Mercure, Sheraton and many others. All situated in the major cities. Five Star accommodation by definition provides the guests with the highest level of service. Hotels with this rating will provide services such as Concierge, valet parking, 24 hour reception and room service, spacious rooms and a generally greater level of personal care and attention to detail. You should feel like a VIP and be pampered accordingly.
Hotels
A wide range of comfortable three to four star hotels can be found in both the cities and country areas throughout Australia. Some of the better known chains include; Novotel, Best Western, Ibis, Vibe, Mantra, and Travelodge to name a few. Country hotels and Pubs are also found all over Australia and offer comfortable accommodation to travellers however the standards vary considerably from place to place.
Resorts
Recreational and leisure activities dominate the Australian resorts. Coupled with high quality service and facilities, resorts are extremely popular for holiday accommodation. Typically resorts will offer a range of activities and include facilities such as swimming pools, gymnasium, sauna, tennis court, games room and outdoor BBQ facilities. Resort accommodation can vary in price from mid range affordable to top-dollar luxurious depending and the facilities and location.
Apartments
More like a home away from home, apartments offer complete privacy and fully self contained facilities. Ideal for family accommodation with two or more bedrooms, you can expect have a complete kitchen with microwave, dishwasher, cooking surface and toaster etc. Appartments also include entertainment systems for music, TV, DVD and complete laundry facilities with washing machine and dryer. Most also have swimming pools, gymnasium and recreational facilities.
Motels
Located all around Australia, motel accommodation offers rooms with private bathrooms, television, telephone and tea and coffee making facilities. Many have swimming pools and spas. Motel chains include; Best Western, Budget, Country Comfort, Flag and Metro Inns to name a few but there are many independently owned properties. Motels are typically in the budget to medium price bracket.
Bed and Breakfast
When you are looking for a weekend getaway or a romantic escape then the B&B is an excellent choice. Typically a small establishment that offers overnight and weekend accommodation, although longer stays are welcomed. Often Bed & Breakfast lodgings are part of a private home with only a small number of rooms. You will find them all over Australia often on country properties or near the sea and out of the major cities. It is usual to have a private bathroom but some have shared bathrooms along with other shared facilities such as a lounge, dining room area and kitchen. Only breakfasts are provided as part of the tariff but it is common to have access to kitchen facilities for self catering.
Motor Inns
The perfect stopover when you are on the road, with facilities similar to most motels, motor inns are designed for with the traveller in mind and they can be found all over the country. Motor Inns are usually conveniently located on or near major roads and highways and are reasonably priced. In general reservations are optional just pull in if you see a vacancy sign.
Hostels
Youth hostels and backpacker venues provide budget priced accommodation with 24 hour access and share facilities. Generally these facilities cater for the younger age groups although there are no age restrictions. Budget style accommodation and a great way to meet people. Hostels are mostly located in the cities and popular tourist destinations.
Caravan & Cabin Parks
Nearly every small town has at least one caravan park, If you are on a self drive holiday either in a campervan or towing a caravan you will find them a convenient and affordable place to stopover. Toilet and shower facilities are usually in a central location in the parks and powered sites available. Most van parks have on-site vans or cabins available and can comfortably accommodate family groups.
Camping
Camp grounds are plentiful and usually located in areas close to natural attractions ie. national parks, beaches, lakes etc. Most have toilet facilities and running water. If part of a caravan park electricity and share-kitchen facilities or BBQ’s are available. Many national park camping areas allow free camping, only a permit is required from the park ranger.
