The Central Desert is a vast arid region that covers an area of approximately 283,000 square kms shared by nine communities with an estimated population of 4,230 people and it encompasses the Tanami Desert. Traditionally, indigenous people lived in the area, the original inhabitants were the Anmatjere, Arrernte and Warlpiri people. Today more than two-thirds of the population are Aboriginal and much of this area is Aboriginal freehold land held by the Central Land Council.
European settlement dates from the 1880s when the land was used mainly for pastoral purposes. The area is predominantly rural used for cattle grazing although there is some gold mining operating at Tanami.
The main towns are Ti Tree, Yuendumu and Lajamanu. The Tanami Road, Plenty and Stuart Highways offer spectacular landscapes and many tourists travel through the region every year.
