The estimated resident population of Queensland at 30 September 2016 4,860,400 people. Queensland had an average annual growth rate of 1.4%, a similar rate to New South Wales. The fastest growing state was Victoria with a growth rate of 2.1%. At June 2015, the median age (the age at which half the population is older and half is younger) of Queensland’s population was 36.9 years, up from 36.4 years at June 2010. The median age of males in 2015 was 36.1 years, compared with 37.6 years for females.
Queensland Demographics
The estimated population density of Queensland is 2.6 persons per square kilometre although the majority of the population (60%) is resident in the major cities on the east coast of the state. Roughly 81% were Australian-born with the majority of overseas born residents from the United Kingdom or Europe, followed by other Oceania countries such as New Zealand and in smaller numbers from the rest of the world.
